2006 MEDICARE DRUG BENEFIT EXPLAINED

In general, the new drug plan that took effect in 2006 has given relief to many seniors burdened by high drug costs, however, many will derive no benefit from the coverage at all and may even lose money by taking the plan.

Seniors who take little or no medicine will be paying premuims and getting little or nothing in return and will actually "lose" money on the plan, also if a seniors drugs cost more than $230.00 per month at retail costs, he or she will enter the "doughnut hole" as it is called. No benefits are available when the client exceeds $2,750.00 worth of medicine during the year, then, he or she will have to buy their own medicine until they exceed $4,200.00 that same year...then benefits will start up again and they will be out of the "doughnut hole" for the remainder of that year.

The whole process starts over again at the beginning of each new year.

Unfortunatly, if you do not sign up during your first "open enrollment" period, you may have to pay a permanent penalty of 1% per month from the ending date of your first "open enrollment period" until the date you do sign up. Also, you will not be permitted to sign up until Nov. 15 through Dec. 31st, each year.
